One of the benefits of joining a CREAR STEM Learning Communities is that you can simultaneously apply to programs that will support you beyond the first semester! We want to make sure you have access to resources that will increase your opportunities to succeed as a STEM student and future graduate student or STEM professional.

ASEMS

· Arizona's Science, Engineering, and Math Scholars (ASEMS) program provides services to support students in graduating with a STEM major. This program focuses on promising students who are the first in their families to attend college, from low-income households, who transferred from a community college, and who are from communities underrepresented in STEM. ASEMS First-Time First-Year Program Outline

Fall Semester

  • ·Be a part of a STEM Learning Community
  • ·Take the Success in STEM 1-credit course led by peer educators
    • Includes weekly group peer mentoring sessions
  • Meet 2-3 times with ASEMS Success Staff
  • Participation in ASEMS Orientation and Inclusive Engagement Workshop

Spring Semester

  • Professionalism in STEM 1-credit course led by professional staff
  • Meet 3 times with peer mentors (1 on 1 meetings)
  • Meet 2-3 times with ASEMS Success Staff

Year 2

  • Research Readiness 1-credit course in the Fall led by professional staff and STEM faculty
  • Opportunity to shadow in a research group or lab
  • Meet 1 time per semester with ASEMS Success Staff
  • Encouraged, but not required, to meet with ASEMS Peer Mentors

Year 3 and Beyond

  • Opportunity to serve as a Peer Educator/Peer Mentor/Tutor · Opportunity to participate in a paid summer research experience through the ASEMS STARS Program

Across all years

  • Ongoing opportunities to connect and build community with faculty and other STEM transfer students
  • Guidance and support in finding undergraduate research, professional/grad school and career preparation opportunities
  • Individual support from professional staff
  • Program workshops and events
  • Access to free ASEMS tutoring services
  • Be eligible to receive financial aid (stipends) on a case-by-case basis

ASEMS Transfer Programs Student Outline

Fall Semester

  • Be a part of a STEM Learning Community 
  • Take the Success in STEM 1-credit course led by peer educators
    • Includes weekly group peer mentoring sessions
  • Guidance and support related to academic and career planning, navigating campus resources, connecting with faculty, etc.
  • Meet 2-3 times with ASEMS Student Success Specialist
  • Participation in ASEMS Orientation and Inclusive Engagement Workshop

Spring Semester

  • Research Readiness 1-credit course led by professional staff and STEM faculty partners
  • Opportunity to shadow in a research group or lab
  • Meet 2 times with peer mentors (1 on 1 meetings)
  • Meet 2-3 times with ASEMS Student Success Specialist · Opportunity to participate in a paid summer research experience through the ASEMS STARS Program

Year 2

  • Meet 1 time per semester with ASEMS Student Success Specialist
  • Not required but able to meet with ASEMS Peer Mentors as needed
  • Opportunity to serve as a Peer Educator/Peer Mentor/Tutor
